California is at a critical juncture. We are facing a brutal $16-billion budget gap that promises further horrific cuts to welfare benefits, healthcare for the poor and public education. That's why the 2012 election year is crucial for our state and nation.

Next November, we'll not only be voting for our next president -- but we will also be voting on the "Tax the Top" initiative, which if approved, would provide much-needed revenue by making California's wealthy millionaires pay their fair share.

And to get ready for November, we need to start building power NOW. We need your participation to get our community electorally active and engaged. On June 5 there is an election with important initiatives, assembly seats and the presidential primary to vote for. This is our opportunity to begin talking to our neighbors and developing our skills so that South L.A. develops as a powerful electoral force.

For too long the poor and middle-class families, students, and the elderly have been shouldering the burden of atrocious budget cuts. It’s time to rebuild the California Dream.
