Support Community Coalition Freedom Schools
One hundred African American and Latino students that have been shut out of summer school programs in Los Angeles this year will benefit from Community Coalition’s Freedom School summer literacy program offered for a second year in a row.
Community Coalition needs your support to ensure that programs like Freedom Schools continue to provide our children and youth with the tools they need to thrive -- specially as summer school options disappear for most children and youth enrolled in LAUSD.
Please donate $50 to help us raise $10,000 to help pay for Freedom Schools in South L.A. To donate, click here.
Freedom Schools is part of the national Children’s Defense Fund program. It is a summer reading enrichment program that teaches elementary, middle school and high school students from South L.A. a love for reading while improving their literacy skills, increasing their knowledge of Civil Rights history and boosting self-esteem.
The Community Coalition Freedom School increased its classes to include 100 students this year, including high school-aged youth. Last year the program enrolled 70 elementary and middle school students in 2011.
Community Coalition's Freedom Schools has welcomed special guest readers like NBA player Chris Bosh, L.A. County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, and Hollywood power couple Katie McGrath and JJ Abrams.
Why is Freedom Schools Important?
National studies have shown that due to the lack of summer reading programs, low-income students are 3 ½ grade levels behind their more advantaged peers by the 9th grade. According to a recent RAND study, summer learning loss is cumulative, and over time contributes to the achievement gap in reading between low-income and higher-income students.
The Community Coalition Freedom School was made possible by the generous financial support of philanthropist family JJ Abrams and Katie McGrath and the support of Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas. Any donation is welcome and needed to ensure that the program continues to Summer 2012. For more information, please contact Community Coalition at (323) 750-9087.
