Land Use Committee
The Land Use Committee works to reduce and prevent crime, violence and blight in South Los Angeles by addressing the over-concentration of nuisance businesses, such as liquor stores, motels and recycling centers. Rather than using policing and incarceration methods to respond to crime, members fight for better land use policies that promote positive economic development and healthier and safer communities.
Community Coalition's Nuisance Abatement Ordinance
For years, Coalition members have worked to shut down businesses that do not comply with city regulations or community standards. Eight years ago, Coalition members help draft the beginnings of what became the Nuisance Abatement Ordinance. The ordinance gives the City the power to enforce conditions and orders placed on nuisance sites and hold businesses owners accountable.
The Nuisance Abatement Ordinance will:
- Give negligent owners 15 days to shut down business
- Cut off utilities (water and power) when owners refuse to leave the premises
- Place the burden of fees for investigations, hearings and reports on the negligent owners, not taxpayers
- Force owners to pay tenants' relocation benefits if the site provides housing
- Protect affordable housing units when a negligent landlord is cited and/or removed.
